WanaBana, Schnucks and Weis Puree Products Cause Lead Poisoning in Children

Migliaccio & Rathod is currently investigating WanaBana, Schnucks and Weis products for reportedly causing acute lead poisoning in children. The products include WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, Schnucks brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches, and Weis brand cinnamon applesauce pouches.

Following alerts from the FDA and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), all three brands have issued voluntary recalls for these products. WanaBana puree pouches were available for purchase nationwide in grocery stores and through popular online platforms such as Amazon and Dollar Tree. Schnucks and Weis puree pouches were available for purchase in select grocery stores.

The FDA and the NCDHHS has identified and issued warnings about these products, asking consumers not to buy, sell, serve, or eat these products; if already purchased, consumers should return them or throw them out. Per the FDA report, parents and guardians of children who may have consumed these products are advised to talk to their health care provider about blood lead tests. Symptoms of lead poisoning include headache, abdominal pain or colic, vomiting, and anemia. Long-term exposures can lead to irritability, lethargy, fatigue, muscle aches or muscle prickling/burning, occasional abdominal discomfort, constipation, difficulty concentrating, muscular exhaustibility, tremor, or weight loss. According to the CDC, lead is especially harmful to children, and even low-dose exposures are linked to developmental delays, difficulty learning, and behavioral issues.

There are at least seven known cases of children being diagnosed with acute lead poisoning in five states: Arizona, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri and North Carolina.
