Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the Nebraska-based technology group Nelnet Servicing LLC (“Nelnet”). Nelnet, which provides student loan technology services notified consumers of an unauthorized security breach of its systems. Hackers may have seized the names and social security numbers of roughly 2.5 million users.
Hackers breached Nelnet’s network between June and July of this year. Nelnet only recently discovered the breach and began notifying affected individuals late this month. As a result, hackers may have already been able to sell the compromised data or otherwise benefit from the fraudulent misuse of such information. People affected by the Nelnet data breach may have already noticed (or may soon notice) one or more of the following types of fraudulent activity related to their personal information: unauthorized credit card inquiries or charges, requests for loans or benefits in an individual’s name without their consent, or disrupted use of an institution’s website.
