Powerhorse 5000 Dual-Fuel Generator CO Sensor Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports of potential carbon monoxide sensor shutdown problems affecting Powerhorse 5000/4000 Dual-Fuel Inverter Generators sold by Northern Tool.

Powerhorse 5000 / 4000 generators use a carbon monoxide monitoring system intended to shut down the generator when potentially unsafe CO conditions are detected. However, there are reports of new generators repeatedly shutting down with a CO alarm despite being operated outdoors in open areas.

One reported Powerhorse 5000 / 4000 generator allegedly operated for only 10–20 minutes at a time before repeatedly shutting down on the CO alarm, despite being outside with no nearby obstruction. The generator was subsequently taken to Northern Tool for inspection or exchange. Pasted markdown

Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating whether other Powerhorse 5000 / 4000 owners have experienced similar nuisance CO shutdowns during proper outdoor operation.

Owners May Have Experienced:

  • A new generator repeatedly shutting down after several minutes;
  • CO alarms during outdoor operation;
  • Difficulty keeping the generator running;
  • Repeated restart attempts followed by another shutdown;
  • Inspection or replacement by Northern Tool; or
  • Inability to rely on the generator for emergency power.

Potential Claims May Include:

  • Defective CO sensor or monitoring components;
  • Defective sensor calibration;
  • Breach of express or implied warranties;
  • Failure to provide an effective repair;
  • Loss of use or diminished product value; and
  • Violations of applicable consumer-protection laws.

Signs You May Be Affected:

  • You own a Powerhorse 5000/4000 Dual-Fuel Inverter Generator;
  • Your generator repeatedly activates its CO alarm outdoors;
  • It shuts down after only several minutes of operation;
  • The problem occurs despite following outdoor-use instructions;
  • Northern Tool inspected, repaired, or exchanged your generator; or
  • CO shutdowns have made the generator unreliable for backup power.
