Boulder Canyon Avocado Oil Chips Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether Boulder Canyon avocado-oil potato chips were misleadingly labeled or sold at a premium despite laboratory testing indicating that the cooking oil in tested products was inconsistent with authentic avocado oil.

Boulder Canyon sells several potato-chip varieties that prominently emphasize avocado oil. For example, its Classic Sea Salt chips list only potatoes, avocado oil, and sea salt as ingredients, while product marketing specifically highlights avocado oil as a reason consumers may choose the chips.

Reporting on the 2026 UC Davis study identifies a tested Boulder Canyon kettle-chip product as failing the researchers’ avocado-oil authenticity testing. The researchers found that processing such as frying did not materially alter the key authenticity markers enough to explain the widespread failures.

Why Consumers May Have Been Misled

Boulder Canyon’s avocado-oil chips are marketed around the oil itself, and consumers may pay more for them because they believe avocado oil is the sole cooking oil.

Where a package lists avocado oil as the only oil ingredient, consumers reasonably may not expect the product to contain another cheaper vegetable oil that is not disclosed on the label.

We Are Interested in Hearing From Consumers Who:

  • purchased Boulder Canyon avocado-oil potato chips;
  • purchased Classic Sea Salt, Malt Vinegar & Sea Salt, or another avocado-oil variety;
  • relied on avocado oil being listed as the only cooking oil;
  • paid a premium compared with conventional potato chips;
  • specifically purchased the product to avoid other cooking oils;
  • purchased the product repeatedly over the past several years; or
  • still have receipts, packaging, photographs, or online order records.

If you purchased Boulder Canyon chips marketed as made with avocado oil, we would like to hear from you.
