Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether consumers paid premium prices for chips, salad dressings, mayonnaise, and other foods marketed as being made with avocado oil even though the products may have contained other, less expensive oils.
A July 2026 study from researchers at the University of California, Davis tested 54 processed foods that identified avocado oil as the only oil ingredient. Researchers reported that 48 of the 54 products tested had oil compositions inconsistent with authentic avocado oil. Among the avocado-oil products tested, 93% of chips, 71% of mayonnaises, and 100% of salad dressings failed the researchers’ authenticity criteria.
Researchers analyzed fatty acids and sterols—the chemical fingerprints of different oils—and also tested whether frying and food processing could explain the results. According to UC Davis, those processing effects were minimal, and the researchers allowed a margin for natural variation before determining that products were inconsistent with authentic avocado oil.
Why Consumers May Have Been Misled
Consumers often pay more for products labeled:
- “Made with Avocado Oil”
- “100% Avocado Oil”
- “Cooked in Avocado Oil”
- “Avocado Oil Kettle Chips”
- or products whose ingredient lists identify avocado oil as the only cooking oil.
UC Davis researchers noted that avocado-oil foods often command prices comparable to or higher than similar olive-oil products. Consumers who intentionally purchased these foods because of the advertised oil may therefore have paid a premium for products that were materially different from what the labels suggested.
We Are Interested in Hearing From Consumers Who:
- purchased chips, dressings, mayonnaise, or other foods marketed as made with avocado oil;
- paid more because the product used avocado oil;
- specifically sought to avoid other vegetable or seed oils;
- relied on an ingredient list identifying avocado oil as the only oil;
- purchased products labeled “100% avocado oil” or similar language;
- still have receipts, online order records, packaging, or photographs; or
- would have paid less—or not purchased the product—had they known another oil may have been present.
If you purchased foods represented as being made with avocado oil and believe you did not receive what you paid for, we would like to hear from you.
