Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating reports that several major brand Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) acne creams contain high levels of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical, above the recommended FDA threshold. Many acne creams use Benzoyl Peroxide to decrease inflammation, kill bacteria, and remove oils from the skin. However, if Benzoyl Peroxide is exposed to slightly higher temperatures or sunlight, it can break down into Benzene, which can cause a myriad of health defects including cancer, anemia, and loss of white blood cells. Reports have shown that some major acne creams contain nearly eighteen times the amount of Benzene considered safe by the FDA.
Benzene contamination in acne creams has become a growing concern, with several labs conducting various studies of acne cream products under different conditions. According to one study, even at room temperature, several major brand BPO acne creams contain Benzoyl Peroxide that breaks down to create high levels of Benzene. The following brands were identified as selling products that contain dangerously high levels of Benzene at room temperature:
- Clean & Clear
- Neutrogena
- Proactiv
- CVS-Brand
- Clearasil
