About the MedStar Health Data Breach
MedStar reported that an unauthorized party gained access to confidential records by using three different employee email addresses. MedStar was not able to fully identify what information was compromised.
The MedStar data breach occurred between January 25, 2023, and October 18, 2023. The compromised information includes:
- Names
- Addresses
- Dates of Birth
- Dates of Service
- Provider Names
- Health Insurance Information
MedStar recently began informing individuals of these breaches through notice posted on the health organization’s website. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
What is MedStar Health?
MedStar Health is a Columbia, Maryland based medical organization that operates more than 120 medical facilities in the Baltimore-Washington area. It is one of the largest employers in that metropolitan area, and operates a number of well-known hospitals in the area. MedStar was formed out of the merger of several health groups in the area.
