Advarra, Inc. (“Advarra”), a third-party service provider, maintains the private information of Moffitt’s patients. On October 26, 2023, Advarra became aware of a cyberattack launched against its computer network containing the confidential patient information. Subsequently, Advarra investigated the hacking incident, where it discovered that a cybercriminal accessed and acquired the personally identifiable information of Moffitt’s patients from October 25, 2023, to October 26, 2023. The compromised information includes:

- driver’s license numbers
- birth certificates
- death certificates

- ethnicity
- religious affiliation/belief

- resumes
- medical history
- medical records
- COVID vaccine information
- patient IDs
- insurance coverage information
- email addresses
- phone numbers

Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute (via Advarra, Inc.) recently began informing individuals of these breaches through a mailed notice letter. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
