Diocese of Phoenix Data Breach Details

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the Diocese of Phoenix data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting 23,853 individuals and their personal information.

On or about January 17, 2024, the Diocese of Phoenix noticed that their systems had been hacked. This unauthorized party gained access to many of the Diocese’s employee benefit files, leading to the data incident. Upon discovering the intrusion, the Diocese started an investigation and determined that it had experienced a hacking event by which unauthorized access to its data was obtained. The Diocese of Phoenix concluded their investigation of the attack on March 23, 2024.  The impacted information includes:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number

Impact of Data Breaches

The Diocese of Phoenix informed individuals of this breach through a mailed notice, delivered on or about April 15, 2024.

All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous if adversely used against affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft noticed identity theft attempts ranging from:

  • fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards;
  • unauthorized credit card applications;
  • medical services or government services ordered in their name;
  • their information being posted on the dark web;
  • a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received;

Though credit monitoring is offered, any amount less than a lifetime of protection is simply inadequate. Data breaches present a lifetime of risk. Additionally, fraud and identity theft attempts or attacks can happen for many years following a data breach. Furthermore, individuals impacted by data breaches should remain vigilant, such as by closely monitoring their accounts, changing passwords, and acting quickly to prevent or minimize fraud once it has occurred.
