Bluefield University Data Breach

Migliaccio & Rathod, LLP, is investigating an ongoing data breach at Bluefield University. Bluefield University is a Christian school with a particular focus on serving the Virginia and West Virigina communities. Recently, online cybercriminals and ransomware users have seized control of University systems.  It is not clear yet whether the University has regained control of their students’ data.

At some point in the near future, it is very likely that Bluefield College will send out letters to affected students informing them that their data has been stolen and what data was stolen.  In other cases, however, large data-holding entities have delayed notification.

All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web.
