Louisiana Department of Corrections Data Breach

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating the Louisiana Department of Corrections for a recently-announced medical data breach. On July 6, 2022, CorrectCare Integrated Health (“CorrectCare”), a company under contract with the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, discovered that its systems had been exposed to the public internet since January.  This system contained sensitive medical information of inmates and pretrial detainees. People who were detained or incarcerated in Louisiana any time from 2013 to 2022, and who received offsite medical care, may be affected.  The information exposed includes first and last names, Social Security numbers (SSNs), Department of Corrections ID numbers, and personal health information.

The Louisiana Department of Corrections has begun to notify affected patients of this issue. Given how long it has been since the breach, cybercriminals may have already been able to sell the data or otherwise benefit from the fraudulent misuse of such information. People affected by the data breach may have already noticed (or may soon notice) one or more of the following types of fraudulent activity related to their personal and health information: unauthorized credit card inquiries or charges, requests for loans or benefits in an individual’s name without their consent, inaccurate information in one’s medical file, or fake medical procedures ordered in someone’s name, but never received.
