Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the Tennessee-based healthcare nonprofit Centerstone of America (“Centerstone”), which only recently notified the public that an unauthorized hacker accessed patient information between November 2021 and February 2022. The lost information potential includes the Social Security numbers, names, addresses, and dates of birth of patients; medical diagnosis / treatment information, and/or health insurance information.
Although Centerstone detected unusual activity in its servers in February, it only began contacting potentially affected patients on August 2. Due to this lapse in time between the data breach and the notice to affected individuals and the prolonged access the unauthorized cybercriminal(s) had to the impacted information, hackers may have already been able to sell the data and/or otherwise benefit from the fraudulent misuse of such information. Some individuals affected by the data breach may have already noticed (or may soon notice) one or more of the following types of fraudulent activity related to their personal and health information: unauthorized credit card inquiries and/or charges, requests for loans or benefits in an individual’s name without their consent, fake medical procedures ordered, and/or disrupted use of the institution’s website.
