Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the Andover, Massachusetts-based healthcare billing and logistics company Medical Healthcare Solutions, Inc., for failing to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach that occurred in October of 2021. The data breach was caused by unauthorized access to the company’s network through a Conti ransomware attack, likely orchestrated by the Wizard Spider hacking group that operates out of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Examples of the types of data exposed in the leak include patient names, addresses, dates of birth, sex, phone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license/state ID numbers, financial account numbers, routing numbers, payment card numbers, card CVV/expiration, diagnosis/treatment information, procedure type, provider name, prescription information, dates of service, medical record numbers, patient account numbers, insurance ID numbers, insurance group numbers, claim numbers, insurance plan names, provider ID numbers, procedure codes, treatment cost, and diagnosis codes.
Despite notifying patients that their information was affected in January of 2022, operators of the Conti ransomware package added patient information from Medical Healthcare Solutions to their dark web leak website in October of 2021, which means that the attack could have happened well before then. In previous data breaches involving ransomware attacks, victims of data theft have had their information posted online with little information about who gained access to it. Victims of these types of data breaches may be forced to spend money out of pocket for credit monitoring or fraudulent charges to bank and hospital accounts. Some individuals affected by the breach may have noticed suspicious credit card charges, requests for services or loans in a patient’s name, medical procedures ordered without patient consent, and/or disrupted medical care.
