The McLaren Health Care Data Breach
McLaren Health Care (“McLaren”) is a health care system consisting of over a dozen hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. On August 7, 2024, McLaren reported that it had fallen victim to a ransomware attack, which disrupted its services. According to the ransom note, allegedly left by the ransomware criminal group INC Ransom, McLaren’s systems were encrypted. Additionally, the ransom note threatened to publish the sensitive data that was stolen if McLaren fails to pay the requested ransom. This is the second time in less than a year that McClaren has been victimized by a hacking incident, with the first data breach resulting in the unauthorized access of the personally identifiable information of over 2.2 million people. Although McLaren has not yet disclosed the sensitive information that was stolen during the most recent data breach, the compromised information involved in the 2023 incident included full names, Social Security numbers, mailing addresses, dates of birth, medical conditions, health insurance information, medical information, and billing information. The McLaren data breach is significant and may result in serious harm to the affected individuals.
All of the information stolen in the August 2024 McLaren Health Care Data Breach is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
