Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating Trane for deceptive advertising claims around their CleanEffects Whole Home Air Cleaner, also known as American Standard AccuClean. Trane boasts that this product can reduce exposure to asthma and allergy triggers and is superior to its competitors because it utilizes patented technology to more “efficiently” clean the air. Moreover, in Trane’s own product description of their CleanEffects device, they explicitly state that it “contributes a negligible amount of ozone – less than .3 ppb to the living space.” However, independent lab study suggests that CleanEffects produces levels of ozone that far exceed the 50 ppb ozone limit of the UL 867 Standard for Safety for Electrostatic Air Cleaners recommended by the CDC for any air cleaner. Consumers understandably report cause for concern, since excess ozone can cause deleterious health effects including coughing, sore or scratchy throat, and inflamed airways. Not only has Trane failed to deliver to consumers the product they marketed in terms of decreased allergy triggers and asthmatic episodes, they have instead, so it seems, introduced a product that makes consumers’ health worse.
