Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the Nassau County, New York-based Healthplex, Inc., a dental insurance company, for failing to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach discovered November of 2021. Through its investigation, Healthplex discovered that an unauthorized party accessed an employee’s email account through a phishing attack and obtained data that was kept on the company’s servers, including patient names, addresses, group names and numbers, member ID numbers, plan affiliations, dates of birth, dates of service, provider names, ADA codes and their descriptions, billed/paid amounts, prescription drug names, Social Security numbers, banking information, credit card numbers, usernames and passwords for the member portal, email addresses, phone numbers, and driver’s license numbers. Healthplex began mailing letters to impacted patients on April 15, 2022.
While Healthplex now claims to have secured its servers and cut off unauthorized access to its systems, the hacker(s) may have already obtained and sold the compromised patient information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
