Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the Fairfield, California-based healthcare company Partnership HealthPlan of California (PHC) for failing to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach that occurred in March of 2022. The incident occurred when the Santa Rosa Press Democrat newspaper published a screenshot, purportedly from the Hive ransomware group, claiming that the stolen data includes 850,000 PHC patients’ names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. PHC’s website also experienced serious interruptions as a result of the cyberattack in late March of 2022.
Although PHC is investigating the incident and plans to notify affected patients about whether their information was accessed in the attack, hackers may have already been able to acquire and sell sensitive patient information such as Social Security numbers. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have been forced to spend money on credit monitoring services or other fraudulent charges. Some individuals affected by the data breach at PHC may have noticed one or more of the following types of fraudulent activity related to their healthcare or financial information: unauthorized credit card charges, requests for loans or benefits in a patient’s name without their consent, fake medical procedures ordered, and/or disrupted use of the institution’s website or patient portal.
