UPDATE 9/20/2021: We are no longer investigating this issue.
Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating Western Digital for their failure to protect user data saved on My Book Live hard drives. Their system fell victim to a third party hacker who, for many consumers, has remotely factory reset their device. Impacted consumers report that they lost all data on the My Book Lives and that the hack has made them feel that their data is unsafe. Western Digital claims that the cloud backup software has not been compromised, though folks are left without their data in the meantime. The accepted temporary solution has been to disconnect the My Book Live’s from the internet, rendering them not usable as advertised.
Consumers began to report these deletions around June 23, 2021 and Western Digital confirmed the hack a day later. Western Digital has not updated their firmware since 2015 and consumers await a more permanent solution and hope of retrieving their lost data.
Are you a My Book Live user who’s data was inexplicably erased?
If so, we would like to hear from you. Please complete the questionnaire below or, if you have further questions, send us an email at [email protected], or give us a call at (202) 470-3520.
