Kohler Rehlko Generator Exercise Shutdown Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports of potential exercise-cycle and firmware problems affecting certain Kohler Rehlko home standby generators equipped with RDC2 or DC2 controllers.

Home standby generators ordinarily perform scheduled exercise cycles to verify that the generator can start and operate properly before emergency power is needed. Owners rely on these tests to help ensure that the generator remains ready for an unexpected utility outage.

At least one recent report describes a Kohler Rehlko generator entering an emergency shutdown during its weekly exercise cycle, with the servicing dealer reportedly attributing the condition to a firmware issue and changing a configuration setting as a workaround. Kohler Rehlko has not been shown by the available materials to have acknowledged a common firmware defect. Pasted markdown

Kohler Rehlko documentation also demonstrates that controller firmware plays an important role in generator operation, and certain generator hardware configurations require specific firmware versions. Pasted markdown

Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating whether certain Kohler Rehlko standby generators experience recurring exercise-cycle shutdowns associated with their controller firmware or configuration.

Owners May Have Experienced:

  • Emergency shutdown during a scheduled exercise cycle;
  • Failure to complete weekly exercise;
  • Recurring controller or firmware-related error messages;
  • A dealer changing controller settings to address the problem;
  • Installation of updated RDC2 or DC2 firmware;
  • Continued exercise problems following service; or
  • Uncertainty about whether the generator will operate during an outage.

Potential Claims May Include:

  • Defective controller firmware;
  • Defective or incompatible generator control systems;
  • Breach of express or implied warranties;
  • Failure to provide an effective repair;
  • Loss of use or diminished product value; and
  • Violations of applicable consumer-protection laws.

  • Your generator shuts down during scheduled exercise;
  • Weekly exercise cycles fail to complete;
  • Your dealer attributed the problem to firmware or controller configuration;
  • Your generator required a firmware update or controller adjustment; or
  • Exercise problems returned after service.
