James Hardie® ColorPlus® Siding Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports that the factory-applied ColorPlus® finish on certain James Hardie® fiber cement siding products may fade prematurely, resulting in uneven appearance, costly repainting, and warranty disputes.

James Hardie markets ColorPlus Technology as a factory-applied finish designed to resist fading, peeling, chipping, and cracking for many years. However, homeowners, contractors, and painters have reported that some ColorPlus siding develops significant fading or discoloration well before the expected service life. Because matching faded factory finishes can be difficult or impossible, affected homeowners may be forced to repaint entire elevations—or even an entire home—to restore a uniform appearance. This investigation concerns the factory-applied ColorPlus finish only, not broader allegations involving fiber cement siding deterioration.

Reported Problems with James Hardie ColorPlus Siding

Consumers have reported experiencing:

  • premature fading of the factory-applied finish;
  • uneven color changes across different elevations of a home;
  • fading that becomes noticeable after only a few years;
  • expensive repainting to restore a consistent appearance;
  • warranty remedies that allegedly do not cover the full cost of repairs; and
  • color mismatches that prevent spot repairs from blending with surrounding siding.

Potential Consequences

Premature finish failure may result in:

  • repainting entire elevations or an entire home;
  • scaffold or lift rental expenses;
  • labor costs substantially exceeding the value of warranty paint;
  • homeowner association compliance issues;
  • diminished curb appeal; and
  • reduced property value caused by visible fading or discoloration.

We Are Interested in Hearing From Homeowners Who Experienced:

  • premature fading of ColorPlus siding;
  • uneven fading across different sides of a home;
  • denial or limitation of warranty coverage;
  • recommendations to repaint rather than replace siding;
  • significant repainting costs because colors could not be matched;
  • widespread fading despite ordinary maintenance; or
  • other problems involving the factory-applied ColorPlus finish.
