Big Agnes Rapide SL Thermal Performance Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether certain Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated sleeping pads may provide less warmth than consumers expect from a pad advertised with an R-value of 4.8 and marketed for three-season use.

R-value is used to measure how well a sleeping pad resists heat loss to the ground. Campers often rely on that number when deciding whether a pad will provide enough insulation for cooler temperatures.

Big Agnes has marketed the Big Agnes Rapide SL with a third-party-rated R-value of 4.8, three-season positioning, and reflective insulation intended to help retain warmth. Some consumers, however, report that the pad feels substantially colder than expected, including when compared with other pads carrying similar or even lower R-values.

Consumers Report:

  • Rapide SL pads feeling unusually cold during three-season camping;
  • substantially less warmth than other pads with similar advertised R-values;
  • cold spots or apparent loss of insulation;
  • reflective insulation becoming loose or shifting inside the pad;
  • the pad becoming noticeably colder after continued use; and
  • replacement pads developing similar insulation problems.

The issue may be especially important for consumers who purchased the Big Agnes Rapide SL because its R-4.8 rating suggested that it would provide reliable insulation in cooler conditions.

Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating whether affected Big Agnes Rapide SL pads provide the thermal performance consumers reasonably expected and whether separation or movement of the internal reflective insulation may cause that performance to deteriorate over time.

Potential Claims May Include:

  • false or misleading representations concerning insulation performance;
  • misleading representations concerning three-season use;
  • failure to adequately disclose deterioration of the internal insulation system;
  • breach of express warranty;
  • unfair or deceptive trade practices; and
  • diminished-value or price-premium damages.

Signs You May Be Affected:

  • You purchased a Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated sleeping pad;
  • the advertised R-4.8 rating influenced your purchase;
  • you selected the pad for three-season or colder-weather camping;
  • the pad felt materially colder than similarly rated sleeping pads you have used;
  • you noticed reflective insulation separating or moving inside the pad;
  • the pad became noticeably colder as it aged; or
  • Big Agnes replaced your pad because of an insulation-related problem.
