GAF Timberline HDZ® Premature Granule Loss Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports that certain GAF Timberline HDZ® asphalt shingles may experience premature granule loss, reducing the shingles’ appearance and potentially affecting their long-term weather resistance.

Roofing granules help protect asphalt shingles from ultraviolet exposure and ordinary weathering. Although some granule loss is expected during installation and early roof use, homeowners have reported that certain Timberline HDZ shingles allegedly lose granules substantially earlier or in greater quantities than expected. Consumers have also reported accumulating granules in gutters and downspouts while the roof is still relatively new.

This investigation concerns premature granule loss and is separate from investigations involving algae staining, roof leaks, installation issues, or unrelated roofing products.

Reported Problems with GAF Timberline HDZ Shingles

Consumers have reported experiencing:

  • excessive granule accumulation in gutters;
  • premature bald spots on shingles;
  • uneven roof appearance;
  • accelerated weathering of roofing materials;
  • concerns regarding reduced roof lifespan;
  • warranty disputes involving alleged normal wear; and
  • replacement recommendations earlier than expected.

Potential Consequences

Premature granule loss may result in:

  • diminished protection from sunlight and weather;
  • reduced roof appearance;
  • costly roof inspections;
  • partial or complete roof replacement;
  • disputes concerning warranty coverage; and
  • reduced confidence in the long-term durability of the roofing system.

We Are Interested in Hearing From Homeowners Who Experienced:

  • warranty denials characterizing the condition as normal wear;
