Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Random Disconnect Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether Lenovo sold certain USB-C and Lenovo ThinkPad Hybrid docking stations with a defect that causes repeated disconnections, unreliable peripheral connectivity, and intermittent failures during ordinary use.

Lenovo markets its USB-C and Hybrid docking stations as professional productivity accessories that allow users to connect monitors, keyboards, mice, Ethernet, speakers, and other peripherals through a single cable. Consumers purchasing these premium docking stations reasonably expect reliable and uninterrupted connectivity. Instead, some owners report that the docks repeatedly disconnect and reconnect without warning, causing monitors to go black, USB devices to disconnect, Ethernet connections to drop, and audio devices to stop functioning.

Many Lenovo ThinkPad consumers report that firmware updates, driver updates, cable replacements, and repeated troubleshooting fail to permanently resolve the issue.

What Consumers Report

Consumers report:

  • External monitors repeatedly disconnect and reconnect during use.
  • USB keyboards, mice, storage devices, or other peripherals unexpectedly disconnect.
  • Ethernet connectivity drops without warning.
  • Audio devices intermittently stop functioning.
  • Firmware updates and driver updates do not permanently resolve the problem.
  • Replacement docks reportedly develop the same connectivity issues.

Why Consumers Should Be Concerned

Consumers purchase docking stations to improve productivity and provide dependable peripheral connectivity. Frequent disconnections can interrupt work, corrupt file transfers, disrupt video conferences, and make expensive docking stations unreliable for their intended purpose.

If certain Lenovo ThinkPad docking stations contain common hardware, firmware, or controller defects that prevent stable operation, consumers may incur unnecessary replacement costs or spend significant time troubleshooting products that allegedly cannot reliably perform as advertised.

This investigation seeks to determine whether Lenovo knew or should have known about recurring connectivity failures affecting certain USB-C and Lenovo ThinkPad Hybrid docking stations before selling them to consumers.
