John Deere DEF Sensor Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports that certain John Deere Tier 4 tractors and combines equipped with diesel exhaust fluid (“DEF”) systems experience premature DEF quality sensor failures that can force otherwise functional equipment into reduced-power “limp mode” or complete shutdowns.

What Consumers Report

Owners report:

  • DEF quality sensors failing unexpectedly during planting or harvest.
  • Dashboard warnings indicating DEF or emissions system faults despite using fresh DEF.
  • Tractors or combines entering reduced-power (“limp”) mode.
  • Equipment shutting down even though the engine and emissions system are otherwise functioning properly.
  • Paying hundreds or thousands of dollars for replacement sensors and dealer service.
  • Experiencing repeated sensor failures after replacement.
  • Losing valuable planting or harvesting time while waiting for repairs.

Why Consumers Should Be Concerned

Modern agricultural equipment depends upon electronic DEF sensors to monitor emissions systems. John Deere consumers allege that these sensors fail prematurely because of heat, vibration, or environmental exposure rather than ordinary wear. When the sensor fails, the equipment may automatically reduce engine power or stop operating altogether, resulting in expensive downtime during critical farming seasons.

Potential Claims May Include

  • Product defect
  • Design defect
  • Breach of express warranty
  • Breach of implied warranty
  • Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act violations
  • Consumer protection violations
  • Failure to disclose a known defect

  • Your machine displayed DEF quality or reductant sensor warnings.
  • Your equipment entered limp mode because of a DEF sensor failure.
  • You paid for repeated DEF sensor replacements.
  • Your equipment experienced costly downtime during planting or harvest.
