Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether Sephora’s “Clean at Sephora” fragrance designations may mislead consumers regarding synthetic fragrance content, ingredient safety, or sustainability standards.
Sephora describes Clean at Sephora as a commitment to offering products formulated without certain ingredients, including parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and mineral oils. Beauty coverage has also reported that Clean at Sephora products may still contain synthetic fragrance under program criteria.
What Consumers Report
Consumers may report:
- Purchasing fragrances because of the Clean at Sephora seal.
- Believing the seal meant the fragrance was safer, cleaner, or more natural.
- Assuming the product had limited synthetic fragrance content.
- Paying more because of the clean beauty designation.
Why Consumers Should Be Concerned
Retailer seals can strongly influence consumer purchasing decisions. If shoppers reasonably interpret “Clean at Sephora” as meaning broader safety, naturalness, or sustainability than the program actually guarantees, consumers may have paid a price premium.
Potential claims may include:
- False advertising
- Misleading certification or seal claims
- Greenwashing
- Consumer protection violations
