Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating Mejuri, a popular jewelry company, following reports that consumers purchase jewelry marketed as gold vermeil expecting high quality and durability, but instead experience premature tarnishing, fading, or a loss of gold finish. According to the Federal Trade Commission, gold vermeil must have a sterling silver base, a gold layer that is at least 2.5 microns thick, and this gold must be 10 karats or higher. This investigation focuses on whether the quality and performance of Mejuri’s vermeil gold jewelry products align with these standards and the expectations created by Mejuri’s marketing.
Reported Issues:
Consumers report:
- That their jewelry marketed as vermeil gold lost its gold finish prematurely, often only after a few wears
- That their gold vermeil jewelry from Mejuri tarnishes faster and significantly more than vermeil gold jewelry purchased from other companies
- Visible fading, discoloration, or rusting of jewelry marketed as vermeil gold, often only after a few wears
- That their skin turned green or became irritated after wearing gold vermeil jewelry from Mejuri
- That the vermeil gold jewelry was advertised as being suitable for “everyday wear” despite these products experiencing rapid deterioration with ordinary, everyday use
Why Individuals Should Be Concerned:
Potential claims include:
- Economic loss
- Performance vs. marketing
- Product defect
- False or deceptive advertising
