Investigation into Black-Colored Plastic Products Linked to Banned Toxic Flame Retardants

Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating expert reports that products with black-colored plastic have been contaminated by banned toxic flame retardants due to a trickle-down effect of recycled plastics from electronic waste.

Consumers may be unaware they may be consuming these products even though these toxic flame retardants have banned since 2021. These retardants can stay in the body for years and have been linked to an increased rate of cancer deaths. Additionally, consuming these retardants can have significant adverse effects on development and neurobehavioral functions in children.

According to research, usage of contaminated plastic could expose consumers to an average 34.7 parts per million of these toxic chemicals each day.

The following products with black-colored plastic have been linked to banned toxic flame retardants:

  • Kitchen utensils
  • Children’s toys
  • Electronics
  • Furniture (sofas, loveseats, recliners, chairs, car upholstery, car seats)
  • Carpet padding
  • Yoga mats
