Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the Atrium Health Data Breach Investigation that affected an undetermined number of individuals and their personal information.
On April 29, 2024, Atrirum Health (“Atrium”) discovered that an unauthorized third-party gained access to employee email accounts via “phishing,” which occurs when an email appears as if it is from a reliable source, but is actually a malicious message from a hacker intended to mislead the recipient into sharing information and/or providing their account login credentials. Subsequently, Atrium conducted an investigation that uncovered a cybercriminal had accessed the affected accounts containing the personally identifiable information and private health information of certain Atrium patients and employees from April 29, 2024, to April 30, 2024. According to Atrium, the compromised information includes the following sensitive data:
- Full Names
- Physical Addresses
- Dates of Birth
- Social Security Numbers
- Medical Record Numbers
- Driver’s License Numbers
- State-Issued Identification Numbers
- Government Identifiers
- Employer Identifiers
- Financial Institution Names
- Security Codes/Pins (and Expiration Dates)
- Treatment Information
- Diagnoses Information
- Health Insurance Information (including Account Numbers and/or Policy Numbers)
- Treatment Cost Information
- Patient Identification Numbers
- Incidental Health References
- Billing Identification Numbers
- Access Credentials and/or Digital Signatures
Atrium Health Data Breach
Atrium Health recently sent notification to affected patients and employees informing them of the data breach. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. As is likely to be the case with the Atrium data breach, in previous cyber-attacks, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
