Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the Kootenai Health data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting 464,088 individuals and their personal information.
The Kootenai Health Data Breach
On August 1, 2024, Kootenai Health discovered that it had fallen victim to a cyberattack, whereby a cybercriminal had accessed Kootenai Health’s network and encrypted files related to its patients. Kootenai Health subsequently conducted an investigation, where it learned the hacker had accessed its patients’ personally identifiable information on February 22, 2024. The compromised information may include full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, medical records, medical treatment and medical condition information, medical diagnoses, and health insurance information. The Kootenai Health data breach is significant and may result in serious harm to the affected individuals.
Kootenai Health recently began informing individuals of these breaches through a mailed notice letter.
All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
