UnitedHealthCare Data Breach Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the UnitedHealthCare data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting healthcare providers and their personal information.

The UnitedHealthCare Data Breach

On an unspecified date, UnitedHealthCare (“UHC”) discovered the personally identifiable information of healthcare providers it insures was available through “certain public-facing URLs.” UHC subsequently conducted an investigation, which uncovered that a UHC employee had inadvertently pasted the personally identifiable information to a public URL, where an unauthorized actor gained access to the data on February 14, 2024, and between May 7, 2024, and May 8, 2024. According to UHC, the compromised information includes full names, Social Security numbers, and the states and major cities where the providers practice. The UHC data breach is significant and may result in serious harm to the affected individuals.

UnitedHealthCare recently began informing individuals of these breaches through a mailed notice letter. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
