Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the First Choice Dental data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting 228,287 individuals and their personal information.
The First Choice Dental Data Breach
On October 22, 2023, First Choice Dental (“FCD”) discovered that it had fallen victim to a ransomware attack, whereby a cybercriminal had accessed FCD’s network, encrypted files related to its patients, and left a ransom note therein. FCD subsequently conducted an investigation, where it learned the hacker had accessed its patients’ personally identifiable information between October 22, 2023 and October 23, 2023. The compromised information may include full names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, and health information. The FSD data breach is significant and may result in serious harm to the affected individuals.
First Choice Dental recently began informing individuals of these breaches through a mailed notice letter. Although FCD’s notification letter redacts the specific information leaked, it is likely the compromised data includes full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses numbers, and government ID numbers.
All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
