Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the Select Education Group, Inc. (“Select Education”) data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting 67,097 individuals and their personal information.
On January 8, 2024, Select Education (including Institute of Technology, National Holistic Institute, Bauman College, Fremont University, and Arch USA) discovered that a hacker had infiltrated its computer systems. Select conducted an investigation into the cyberattack, where it learned that an unauthorized party accessed the files containing students’ sensitive personal information on or about November 5, 2023. The compromised information includes:
- Names
- Social Security numbers
- Billing records
- Payment records
- Academic records.
Select Education recently began informing individuals of this breach through a mailed notice letter. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
