Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the Harrisburg Medical Center (“HMC”) data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting at least 147,826 individuals and their personal information.
On August 24, 2023, HMC became aware of a network disruption that occurred on or about December 19, 2022, through December 23, 2022, by which unauthorized access to its data was obtained. Patient information was impacted. This information potentially includes name, contact information, Social Security Number, date of birth, insurance information, clinical information such as diagnosis/conditions, lab results, and prescription information. In some instances, the data may also have included driver’s license numbers or other government ID numbers, financial account numbers, and digital signatures.
HMC initially informed individuals of this breach on December 12, 2023, through a mailed notice letter. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
