Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating Highmark Inc., a hospital organization based in Pittsburg, for an apparent failure to safeguard individual information in a data breach. Between November 13, 2022, and December 15, 2022, an unauthorized actor gained access to Highmark’s systems through a malicious phishing scheme. The lost data includes names, enrollment information such as group name, identification number, claims or treatment information such as claim numbers, dates of service, procedures, prescription information, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, driver’s license number, passport number, financial information, and, importantly, Social Security Numbers (SSNs). This is a wide array of data, posing a great threat to the patients affected.
The cybercriminals responsible for the breach may have already obtained and sold the compromised patient information. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, medical and/or government services ordered in their name, or their information being posted on the dark web.
