Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating chemical hair straightener manufacturer over a newfound correlation with the development of uterine cancer. Incidences of uterine cancer have spiked exponentially in the recent past as has the coinciding mortality rate, particularly for women of color. This trend has triggered researchers to look for potential causes and correlations attributable to everyday sources. One such study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (N.I.E.H.S.), tested a hypothesis about chemical hair products, including many hair straighteners which contain potentially carcinogenic toxins such as parabens, bisphenol A, metals and formaldehyde. While the results of the study found no definite causation of uterine cancer from frequent use of hair straighteners, it did raise some important correlative hypotheses that require further research. The results indicate that these products certainly could play a role in increasing a woman’s risk of developing uterine cancer. Airborne exposure to these chemicals poses some level of concern on its own, but scientists raise additional concern about the fact of these straighteners being directly applied to the scalp, especially when previous hair-care related burns or lesions may exist and facilitate entry into the bloodstream.
Manufacturers of hair and cosmetic products are well aware that they do not need FDA approval of ingredients nor final products before bringing them to market. It is, therefore, each company’s individual ethical and legal responsibility to ensure the safety of their products as it relates to the health of their customers. Migliaccio & Rathod LLP believes that companies responsible for manufacturing products which cause or increase risks of negative health outcomes ought to be held accountable for this failure to properly warn of and safeguard consumers from potential or likely health risks.
