Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the Green Valley, Arizona-based retirement community La Posada at Park Centre, Inc. for failing to safeguard sensitive employee information in a data breach that occurred in December of 2021. The data breach occurred when files and email accounts on the La Posada IT network were locked by an unauthorized actor. An investigation that concluded in February of 2022 determined that some of the information viewed by the unauthorized actor included the personal identifying information of La Posada employees. Examples of the types of data exposed in the leak include first and last names, dates of birth, driver’s licenses, Social Security numbers, direct deposit information, passport numbers, Drug and/or TB test results, information associated with explanation of benefits, self-funded medical plan participants, Member ID numbers, and COVID Vaccine cards.
While La Posada claims that the information lost varies by individual, cybercriminals commonly use information obtained from data breaches to commit a wide variety of identity theft. For example, in previous data breaches where employee files were removed from a company’s website, this data has been used in fraudulent requests for credit services, as well as banking and medical procedures without permission. Individuals in previous breaches have had to pay out of pocket for credit monitoring or for new fraudulent charges. Some La Posada employees may have noticed suspicious credit or banking activity, disrupted medical care, or medical appointments fraudulently created, canceled, and/or billed in their name.
