Highland Health Systems Data Breach Investigation

By Bruno OrtegaJune 20, 2024Data Breach

Migliaccio & Rathod is involved in the Highland Health Systems data breach investigation.

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the Highland Health Systems (“Highland Health”) data breach investigation, for a data breach affecting 83,543 individuals and their personal information.

THE HIGHLAND HEALTH DATA BREACH

On July 3, 2023, Highland Health noticed suspicious activity on its information technology systems. Subsequently, Highland Health conducted an investigation, where it learned that a cybercriminal had accessed the personal information of its consumers. According to Highland Health, the data breach occurred on July 3, 2023, the same day that it noticed the unauthorized activity. The compromised information includes but is not limited t0: dates of birth, email addresses and passwords, driver’s license numbers, government-issued identification numbers, Social Security numbers, financial account information, medical information, and health insurance information.

Highland Health recently began informing individuals of these breaches through a mailed notice letter. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. In previous data breaches, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.

There are a number of things that you should do to keep your information safe. Experts at the NCDOJ recommend that you request fraud alerts from the credit bureaus, sign up for credit monitoring, and keep an eye on your accounts. The FTC likewise offers resources for consumers that have been impacted.
