Migliaccio & Rathod is currently investigating the North Carolina State University in Raleigh due to reports of cancer-causing toxins in lecture halls and classrooms. Over 150 students, staff, and alumni who spent time at Poe Hall, a class building on the university campus, have been diagnosed with diseases including lymphoma, thyroid and breast cancer, and various types of sarcoma.
Poe Hall held educational and psychology classes for thousands of students prior to being shut down in November 2023, one month after an investigation revealed several rooms were contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs have been linked to cancer and are known human carcinogens, and the PCB levels in the building were more than 38 times higher than the limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Poe Hall was built in 1971, when PCBs were commonly used in building materials and industrial products like insulators and electric appliances. Although they were banned in 1979 due to concerns of harm to humans and the environment, they remain in many older buildings.
The university currently faces lawsuits from several alumni who allege that they developed cancer as a result of PCB exposure at NCSU’s Poe Hall.
