Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating the West Virginia-based Monongalia Health System for failing to safeguard sensitive patient information in a data breach that occurred in August of 2021. The data breach was caused by unauthorized access to a hospital contractor’s email account that allowed an unauthorized actor to access the personal information of past and present patients. Examples of the types of data exposed in the leak include names, dates of birth, addresses, social security numbers, medical records, lab results, diagnoses, medications, health insurance information, and dates of services.
Some of the Monongalia Health facilities affected by the data breach include:
• Monongalia County General Hospital
• Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital
Patient information obtained from hospital networks by unauthorized actors can be used to commit a number of identity theft crimes. In previous data breaches, individuals have had to monitor their financial accounts for fraudulent activities or pay out of pocket for credit monitoring services. Past and present patients may have noticed suspicious credit or banking activity, disrupted medical care, or medical procedures fraudulently ordered in their name.
Are you or have you been a Monongalia Health patient who has received a data breach notification letter in the past year?
