Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating Meta Muse for Mac over concerns that the AI assistant may have accessed users’ private Apple Messages without their knowledge or permission.
What Happened?
In September 2026, Inc. columnist Jason Aten reported that Meta’s Muse AI assistant sent him an unsolicited notification referencing a private Apple Messages conversation between him and a co-worker. Aten said he had not given Muse permission to read his Messages and believed they were inaccessible to the application.
Meta has disputed concerns that Muse can access Messages without permission. Meta representatives have stated that Muse’s Messages integration is opt-in and that two settings must be enabled for Muse to read Messages:
- Full Disk Access must be granted to Muse in macOS; and
- The Messages connector must be enabled within Muse.
According to Meta, Muse cannot read Messages unless both permissions are enabled.
On October 2, 2026, Apple announced changes to Full Disk Access in macOS, warning that some developers were using permission in ways that could expose users’ files, mail, messages, and browsing history without their full knowledge and understanding. Apple did not identify Meta or Muse by name.
Meta Muse users may be particularly relevant to the investigation if they believe Muse accessed or referenced information from their Messages when Full Disk Access, the Messages connector, or both were disabled.
Mac users can check whether Meta Muse currently has Full Disk Access by navigating to:
Apple Menu → System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access → Muse
Users can also check the Messages connector within Muse by navigating to:
Muse → Settings → Connectors → Messages
