Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports that Westinghouse iGen11000DFc generators may drain their starting batteries while stored and turned off, potentially leaving the generator unable to start when backup power is needed.
The Westinghouse iGen11000DFc is designed in part for emergency home backup power. Because generators may remain unused for extended periods between outages, owners depend on the starting battery remaining sufficiently charged while the generator is stored.
Owners have reported that the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc’s factory starting battery can become completely discharged after remaining connected to the generator for several weeks. One owner reported repeatedly testing the condition and experiencing approximately four-week battery depletion, while disconnecting the battery from the generator prevented the same discharge. Another owner has also reported regularly needing to recharge the factory battery during storage. Pasted markdown
Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating whether the Westinghouse iGen11000DFc contains an excessive parasitic electrical draw or other electrical defect that can drain its starting battery while the generator is not in use.
Owners May Have Experienced:
- A dead starting battery after the generator sat unused;
- The generator failing to electrically start during an outage;
- Repeatedly needing to recharge the factory battery;
- Replacing a battery only to experience another discharge;
- The battery remaining charged when physically disconnected from the generator; or
- Having to use a charger or battery maintainer to keep the generator ready.
Potential Claims May Include:
- Defective electrical or control systems;
- Excessive parasitic battery drain;
- Breach of express or implied warranties;
- Failure to adequately disclose storage-related battery problems;
- Loss of use or diminished product value; and
- Violations of applicable consumer-protection laws.
Signs You May Be Affected:
- You own a Westinghouse iGen11000DFc;
- Your starting battery dies after the generator sits unused;
- You regularly need to recharge the battery;
- Replacing the battery did not permanently resolve the problem;
- Disconnecting the battery prevents it from becoming depleted; or
- Your generator failed to start when you needed emergency power.
