Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating reports that certain Pit Boss pellet grills and smokers may unexpectedly turn on, begin heating, or activate electrical components even though the owner did not intentionally start the grill.
Reported incidents involve several Pit Boss product lines, including certain Pro Series, 820, 1150, and Laredo models. Owners have described discovering their grills heating or smoking while unattended, including instances where the control panel appeared to be turned off.
Unexpected activation of an outdoor cooking appliance can be particularly concerning if the grill is covered, located near a home or other combustible materials, or left unattended because its owner reasonably believes it is turned off.
Consumers Report:
- grills unexpectedly turning on while unattended;
- grills beginning to heat while covered;
- discovering smoke even though the grill had not intentionally been started;
- blowers or igniters activating while the control panel appeared off;
- unexpected activation occurring overnight or after the grill had been unused for an extended period;
- receiving replacement electronic controllers after reporting the problem; and
- recurring electrical, ignition, or controller problems.
One reported incident involving a Pit Boss PB820CS1 described the blower and igniter allegedly activating even though the control panel appeared to be off. The owner reportedly received a replacement controller after contacting support.
Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating whether affected Pit Boss grills may share a common problem involving their electronic controllers, firmware, ignition systems, or power-management components.

- failure to disclose a recurring safety-related problem; and
