HDX 250-Watt Halogen Portable Work Light Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether Home Depot sold HDX 250-watt portable halogen work lights that become dangerously hot during normal operation and expose consumers to unnecessary burn hazards.

Portable work lights are intended to be moved throughout a work area as projects progress. Consumers reasonably expect halogen bulbs to produce heat, but they also expect the fixture to remain reasonably safe to reposition and adjust while following ordinary operating instructions.

Consumers report that certain HDX 250-watt work lights allegedly become too hot to safely touch, lack a convenient on/off switch that would reduce contact with heated components, experience premature bulb failures or bulb explosions, and stop functioning after relatively limited use.

What Consumers Report

Consumers report:

  • The work light becomes too hot to safely reposition during ordinary use.
  • Accessible portions of the fixture allegedly reach dangerous temperatures.
  • The product lacks an integrated on/off switch, requiring consumers to unplug the light.
  • Bulbs reportedly shatter or explode unexpectedly.
  • The fixture experiences premature failures after relatively little use.
  • Consumers describe the product as presenting an unnecessary safety hazard.

Why Consumers Should Be Concerned

Consumers purchasing portable work lights expect them to function safely throughout ordinary home improvement and construction projects. While some heat is expected from halogen bulbs, products should be designed so consumers can safely operate and reposition them without unreasonable burn risks.

This investigation seeks to determine whether the HDX 250-watt halogen work light contains design defects, inadequate warnings, insufficient insulation, or other safety issues that expose consumers to preventable injuries.
