Roost Smart Leak Detector Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether Roost, Inc. misled consumers by advertising that its Wi-Fi Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector would remain supported through December 31, 2027, then discontinuing the product and remotely disabling it approximately 17 months earlier.

What Consumers Report

Consumers report:

  • Purchasing a Roost Wi-Fi Smart Water Leak and Freeze Detector based on representations that the product would remain supported through December 31, 2027.
  • Receiving an email from Roost announcing that support would end in approximately 30 days.
  • Learning that the device would be remotely disabled before the advertised end-of-life date.
  • Losing leak detection and freeze monitoring after the shutdown.
  • Being denied refunds after Roost discontinued the product.

Why Consumers Should Be Concerned

Consumers purchase smart home devices expecting them to function for the period promised by the manufacturer. If a company advertises a specific end-of-life date but intentionally disables the product well before that date, consumers may lose the benefit of their purchase and be forced to replace devices that were expected to remain operational.

Roost’s own archived product pages reportedly represented that the Smart Leak Detector would remain supported through December 31, 2027, and earlier versions further stated that “all warranties and product support remain.” Roost’s Terms of Service also reportedly provide for substantially longer end-of-life and end-of-support notice than the approximately 30 days customers received.

Potential claims may include:

  • False advertising
  • Breach of express warranty
  • Breach of implied warranty
  • Breach of contract
  • Consumer protection violations
  • Unfair and deceptive trade practices
