CLOSED: Amazon Government ID Requirement Investigation

As of 10/27/2025, M&R is no longer investigating this reported issue.

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is investigating whether Amazon unfairly conditions refunds and returns on the submission of government ID.

What Customers Report About Amazon ID Requirement

Shoppers on Slickdeals and other consumer forums report that after initiating a return or refund, Amazon demands upload of a driver’s license or government-issued ID — and warns that refunds may be withheld until this is provided. Many users say this policy appeared without warning and is not clearly disclosed at checkout or in the return terms.

Why Consumers Should Be Concerned

Conditioning refunds on uploading sensitive personal information raises serious consumer protection and privacy concerns. If Amazon did not clearly disclose this requirement before purchase, it could constitute an unfair or deceptive practice under state consumer protection laws. Requiring government ID to recover one’s own funds may also implicate privacy and electronic funds transfer regulations.

Signs You May Be Affected by Amazon’s Refund Policy

  • Amazon’s requested government ID when you attempted to return an item.
  • Your refund was delayed or denied because you refused to upload ID.
  • You were not informed of the ID requirement before purchasing.
