Lithium-Ion Portable Charger Safety Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating widespread consumer safety concerns related to lithium-ion portable charger and power banks sold across the United States between 2023 and 2025. These devices have been linked to serious thermal safety hazards, including fires, explosions, overheating, and property damage, raising questions about false and misleading marketing claims.

Misleading Safety Claims and Consumer Risks

Many of these lithium-ion power banks were advertised with claims of “complete safety” and “total protection” against battery malfunctions and thermal events. These assurances were prominently featured on product packaging, manufacturer websites, and online retailer listings.

However, lawsuits and independent investigations suggest that the advertised safety systems are inadequate. In reality, these systems typically provide only external circuit monitoring and lack the capability to detect or prevent internal battery failures – the leading cause of thermal runaway, which can result in battery fires and explosions.

Despite knowing the limitations of their safety features, manufacturers and retailers allegedly continued to market these portable chargers as offering comprehensive protection, putting consumers at significant risk.

Reported Incidents Affecting the Portable Charger

Numerous incidents have been reported, including:

  • Severe overheating

  • Sudden fires

  • Dangerous explosions

  • Property damage

  • Burn injuries and other physical harm

  • Smoke inhalation requiring emergency medical attention
