Greenwashing Charges for Recycling Investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is currently investigating whether waste companies misrepresent their recycling programs while charging customers extra for recycling service. A 2021 lawsuit alleged that Republic Services marketed itself as recycling materials that were instead sent to landfills. Consumers across Reddit echo doubts about whether blue-bin contents are truly recycled or if these companies are greenwashing.

Concerns About Greenwashing

By advertising “zero-waste” or sustainability commitments while diverting recyclables to landfills, companies may engage in false advertising and consumer deception. Such misrepresentation can also amount to breach of contract when recycling services are specifically billed.

Why This Matters for Consumers

Consumers pay a premium for recycling services in order to reduce their environmental impact. False claims deprive them of the benefit of the bargain and undermine trust in sustainability initiatives.
