If your Pixel 6a suddenly feels slower to charge, this may not be your imagination – and it may not be your fault.
Starting July 8, 2025, Google began rolling out a mandatory software update for certain Pixel 6a phones in response to battery overheating issues. According to Google, this update is designed to “manage battery performance” and prevent overheating. However, this update intentionally reduces your phone’s battery capacity and charging speed after your device reaches 400 charge cycles.
If you own a Pixel 6a and have noticed a decrease in the phone’s performance, we want to hear from you.
The Pixel 6a Battery Update
Google has confirmed that:
- The update is mandatory, not optional.
- The update applies only to “Impacted Devices,” but Google has not publicly defined what qualifies.
- Once your phone hits 400 full charge cycles (about 12-18 months of regular use), charging becomes slower and the battery will not hold as much power.
- The update installs quietly along with Android 16 – whether you agree to it or not.
While Google claims this is to protect users from overheating, many consumers are asking: why wasn’t this disclosed up front when the phone was purchased?
Pixel 6a Class Action Lawsuit Investigation
Under consumer protection laws, tech companies must not mislead consumers about the products they sell. If:
- You purchased a Pixel 6a without being told it would be intentionally throttled after 400 charge cycles,
- You relied on advertised features like battery life and fast charging, and
- Your device now performs worse than advertised after a mandatory update you did not agree to,
You may have grounds to take action. Similar lawsuits have been brought against other tech giants and courts have found that undisclosed software updates that reduce device performance can violate consumer rights.
Google Pixel 6a Decreased Charging Speed and Battery Life
If you’re experience any of the following on your Pixel 6a:
- Slower charging even with the same charger,
- Shorter battery life than before the update,
- Unexplained lag or overheating warnings,
- Frustration that your phone feels debilitated by a software change you did not agree to,
You are not alone. And it may not be a coincidence – it may be due to the Battery Performance Program, which Google applied to your phone without your explicit consent.
