American Water Data Breach Investigation

data breach investigation

Migliaccio & Rathod LLP is involved in the American Water Data Breach Investigation that affected an undetermined number of individuals and their personal information.

On October 3, 2024, American Water discovered unauthorized activity on its computer networks and systems. A subsequent investigation determined that American Water had fallen victim to a data breach. As a result, American Water reports that to protect the personally identifiable information of its estimated 14 million customers (and to prevent further harm to its environment), the company disconnected or deactivated certain computer systems impacted by the cybersecurity incident, including its MyWater customer portal. American Water has not yet divulged if the personally identifiable information of its customers were stolen during the data breach, citing an ongoing investigation.

American Water Data Breach

American Water recently posted notice of the data breach. All of the information stolen is likely valuable and dangerous to affected victims. As is likely to be the case with the American Water data breach, in previous cyberattacks, victims of data theft have noticed identity theft attempts ranging from fraudulent charges on bank accounts or credit cards, to unauthorized credit card applications, to medical services or government services ordered in their name, to their information being posted on the dark web, to a massive uptick in the number of spam text messages, calls and emails received.
