Investigation into Lead in Cinnamon Products

Migliaccio & Rathod is investigating reports that several major brands of cinnamon products have levels of lead above the recommended threshold. Only a quarter of teaspoon of these products has more lead than you should consume in one day, and poses a serious threat to children and pregnant women, where the high levels of lead can lead to serious damage to the brain and spine as well as causing other developmental disabilities.

Lead contamination in spices has become a growing concern, with a rash of lead poisonings from the cinnamon in applesauce packets to an FDA warning regarding several ground cinnamon products with high enough lead levels to cause health issues if consumed regularly. Nonprofit groups like Consumer Reports have done testing on several cinnamon products, and discovered dangerously high levels in the following products:

  • Paras Cinnamon Powder
  • EGN Cinnamon Powder
  • Mimi’s Products Ground Cinnamon
  • Bowl and Basket Ground Cinnamon
  • Rani Brand Ground Cinnamon
  • Zara Foods Ground Cinnamon
  • Three Rivers Cinnamon Stick Powder
  • Yu Yee Brand Five Spice Powder
  • BaiLiFeng Five Spice Powder
